Day two of our road trip was considerably different than the first. On the first day the weather had been nice and sunny, and the scenery hadn't changed much. As we got closer to the cost though we began to experience rapid weather changes amisdt a continually shifting backdrop. It rained all morning, was sunny and then rained again, and then got sunny again. We drove up the Catlins Coast after a brief stop in Invercargill. Not much to see there that I can remember, but the coast was quite a looker. We stopped at Kaka point, which I was happy to see had a "No Dumping" sign. The weather cleared up right when we stopped, stayed clear the entire time we were there, and then went back to rainy as soon as we got in the car. This was the first beach we stopped at, not the last though, so we spent quite some time taking pictures and running around in the sand. The beaches here are all incredibly nice with white sand, blue water and plenty of shells and rocks and sticks to poke at. After exhausting ourselves we jumped back in the car and continued our drive. We arrived in Dunedin, our logest stop of the whole trip, in the late afternoon and were blown away once again by the change. We had been driving through small country towns for the last two days, then we crested a hill and boom, major city. Technically, Dunedin is the fourth largest city in the world. I'm assuming this is by area because there are only four million people in all of New Zealand. I have more friends than that on facebook. We didn't want to drive into town quite yet, so we drove out onto the Otago penninsula to see if we could find a good spot for lunch. We settled on a dock about halfway and sat down to the windiest lunch ive ever eaten. I'm not quite sure why we picked that particular pier to eat on, but it turned out to be a bad choice. We had bought some pita bread and a little hummus for a snack, and I must say it was quite tasty until the pita bread caught the wind and flew into the lake. As we'd only eaten three of the eight slices we were a little bit disapointed. The entire thing was Maria's fault because she picked that spot for lunch. Disapointed, but still in high spirits, we drove back to town and decided to walk around. We found parking to be a bit of a pain in the butt, but eventually found a spot a little ways out of town where we could park for long periods of time free of charge.
