We said goodbye to Newport this morning but not before taking in a nice sunrise and attending our customary morning greco Roman wrestling match.
We had a short drive North to Cape Kiwanda but we were on a tight-ish schedule because Dad had an important meeting to attend at 1pm. Luckily we made it in plenty of time and got the trailer all set up without a hitch (other than the one on our truck, hardy har har).
Our site at Cape Kiwanda is near the top of our list of best RV spots. It is across the street from the beach, has an indoor pool, a hot tub, a very nice mercantile, and free rentals of bikes and sand sleds. Crazy. The only downside is that there are a lot of bunnies all over the campground and they drive Roz absolutely crazy.
After Dad's oh so important meeting we went to the beach to soak up some vitamin d and to climb the very very tall dune on the cape. We had stopped at this particular beach two years ago on Remy's birthday trip, and we were wondering if much would have changed. Luckily it was exactly as we left it.
The dune is 240 feet high, and climbing it is quite a chore with the loose sand and the very steep face. We decided to take the slightly longer but also slightly less steep path around the back. This path also offered a view of the water and the sea cliffs and caves. Dad even managed to snap a picture of a sea dragon emerging from its home.
Remy was his usual climbing and chatting self. At one point he started to overheat so we had to get creative to cool him down. We considered dipping him in the ocean but he vetoed that idea.
Eventually we made it to the top of the dune. On the way down the dogs got to run a bit and we decided to explore the area behind the dune as well. We walked through the sand for a while (with Remy narrating a game where we were trying to find our way out of the desert), and eventually we had found enough clues and solved enough riddles to earn our freedom.
Back at the campsite we hopped into the pool for some relaxation and swim practice before dinner. The pool was even heated warm enough for Mom! After dinner we had a movie night and watched two different Wallace and Gromit films. We truly had a grand day out.
