Life's a Beach

Haha, a very cliche title indeed. Last weekend was my first full weekend of work, I only worked one day the first week, and I have come to discover that working at night and sleeping during the day is much harder than I originally thought. Friday's and Saturday's at Yellow Cross (the bar I bus in) are extremely busy, with patrons usually hanging out till well after 3am. On top of this, the bar and dance floor have to be restocked and cleaned, a task that takes at least and hour. When all is said and done, I'm usually home by 6am. I have a hard time sleeping during the day so I usually get up around 10ish, make breafast, and then nap the rest of the day on Sunday. Monday isn't much better, although I hate to waste a day off so Maria and I usually walk around town or go grocery shopping.

On Tuesday this week, we decided that we had better get out and do something, so we worked out the bus system, which also costs much more than in the US, and bused out to Sumner to spend the afternoon strolling the beach. New Zealand has a very large coast, it is an island, and much of this coast is beach. I am happy to report that the sand here is nice and white, perfect for strolling barefoot. The water is still cold but one can definately run back and forth between the water and the sand. We walked and explored for a few hours before laying down and napping in the nice afternoon sunshine. There wasn't too much to see, just some rocks and pretty scernery. New Zealand is rather lacking in wildlife, and I have yet to see any beach animals other than seagulls and the lone seal in Kaikoura. I have found several crab claws, but alas, no whole crabs. A number of dogs came over and disturbed us while we were sleeping, but they were merely investingating, so no harm done. Afterwards we played with the camera and took pictures. The lighting on the beach provides for excellent photographs so we snapped away. We bused home and had an excellent sushi dinner.
