With our Santa Barbara days behind us we headed further north to Morro Bay to finish out the week before heading to San Francisco. We had originaly planned to spend some more time with Linnea, Chris, and, Elisabet, but their whole family caught a cold just before we would have arrived, so we pivoted and cut that portion of our trip out.
When we arrived in Morro Bay Mom and Dad had one and a half very busy days of work left. There wasn't much time for anything other than work and dinner, so we spent the majority of our time in and around the trailer. We parked in Morro Bay State Park, another very well appointed state park right on the water. Thursday night we went to the Christmas market, which was a lot of Christmas lights. Like, a bagillion. The lights were very cool, but there were also a bagillion people. We did one loop through the entire walk and headed home.
When Friday finally rolled around we packed as much activity in as possible, starting with Dad's birthday celebration. Hurray for a new coffee making device!
After birthdaying we took a short walk around Morro Rock. It is, ummh, a very large rock. The most notable thing about Morro Rock is its location. It stands at the end of a narrow jetty with water almost all the way around it. This makes it a very big rock that stands out very well.
After exploring around the rock we took Emma for a quick stroll. Remy and Dad built a harbor in one of the streams feeding into the ocean. We sent many sticks and other objects sailing down the river. Remy was very careful not to get wet for the first five minutes and then decided that walking in the ankle deep water with his socks and shoes on was perfectly acceptable.
For lunch we went to the very funky High St. Deli. This sandwich shop would have fit right in to the Funk Zone. We had some excellent Sammies, some very good beer, and soft serve ice cream that Remy raved about (he always raves about ice cream).
After lunch we rented kayaks and got out on the water. We paddled North from the park toward downtown. Morro Bay is an outstanding place for any watersports, as the bay is relatively sheltered, shallow, and full of interesting animals. We crossed paths with a group of otters, including several mom and baby pairs. We tried to paddle through the estuary to the south of our camp, but the water wasn't quite high enough and we had already beached ourselves once on a sandbar. We did see lots of shorebirds, including curlews, willets, pipers, egrets, blue heron, and white pelicans.
After paddling we walked around downtown and had some soft pretzels and wine at a marina side wine shop. Mom and Dad watched the sunset while Remy built Legos. An excellent end to an excellent day.
