Dunedin, day 2

Sunday proved to be a busy day for us. We got up early to eat breakfast and be on time for our 10am brewery tour, complete with complimentary beer tasting. The tour was great, our guide was an awesome old Kiwi who really knew his stuff. The tour wasn't so much about the brewing process as it was about the history of Dunedin and the brewery itself, which is a major historical landmark within the town. The tour concluded in the tasting room, which consisted of a bar, glasses, and six taps of Speights different brews, accompanied by unlimited tasting. I tried all of them several times, and I must say that Speights does some quality work. It's reported that you can buy their beer at Trader Joe's, so I will have to check that out when I get back. After our beer tour and tasting, it was off to the Cadbury factory for a chocolate tour. The tour was abbreviated because it was a Sunday, so we didn't actually get to see any candy being made. We did however get to see two tons of liquid chocolate dumped down a chute. Worth $12? Maybe. We also got a bag of free candy each, and the potential to win up to five additional candy bars through trivia asked throughout the tour. Since both Maria and I were still enojying the benefits of our free beer tasting, we didn't expect to do well on the quiz. We got all of the them right though and could easily have claimed the prizes, but decided that the 12 year olds deserved the candy more, Cadbury chocolate isn't that good anyway. They make a variety of really wierd flavors, including marshmallow fish coated in chocolate, chewy banana crap coated in chocolate, pineapple crap coated in chocolate and some kind of orange hardened sponge crap. They also offer energy chocolate, which it turns out is just dark chocolate. False advertising at it's best. It was now late afternoon and we were hungry again. We had quite a ways to drive as we wanted to get to Christchurch that night to meet our roommates and check out our diggs before heading north, so we decided we needed a big filling meal to carry us through. Great Taste to the rescue. It was every bit as good the second time around, probably better (it was also $5 cheaper because we made it in time for lunch).
