It was a chilly Saturday morning, and We knew we had picked the right breakfast place based on the line out the door. Although, maybe it was also the only place open?
We sat on the porch and had to compete with an army of small black birds that were on a plate of food the minute you stood up. The gentleman at the table next to us had to hire Remy and Dad to guard his plate while he went to get his coffee order. There were no casualties.
Once the people were fully fueled it was time to fill up the car. Gas prices have been expectedly high throughout the trip, right around 5.60 a gallon most places. We had passed several gas stations in Fort Bragg that were similarly priced. When we stopped at the very small gas station in Mendocino we had to do a double take. $10 a gallon! Dad thought maybe the pump was broken. Nope! Both pumps were sitting at $9.95 a gallon. There was a bit of debate about what to do. We were very low on fuel and it was hard to tell if there was another gas station in range.
In the end we added two gallons and decided to try for the Albion Store in 15 miles, which Google told us has gas. When we arrived we were relieved to see much cheaper gas. Only $7.90 a gallon! Oh the savings. We reluctantly added a few more gallons to the tank and soldiered on.
Our road was once again a winding one. After the first few curves we were longing for the faceless albeit straight blacktop of I-5. We had no regrets as to our route choice though because our next stop was a CHEESE TOUR. We pulled into Pennyroyal Farms very ready to see some farm animals and taste some cheese.
The tour took us all throughout the farm, including stops to see the milking machinery, the mama goats, the teenage goats, the baby goats, the grandma goats, and the sheep. We also saw two barn cats. The goats were very friendly and everyone got to pet them.
After the farm tour we got a look at the cheese making process, and then we got to taste the results of the cheese making. Delicious! All of the cheeses were made from goat and sheep's milk, and all of the milk was produced on the farm. The cheeses were all paired with wines also made on the farm. Mom and Dad agreed that everything was delicious. Remy got to have a special sampling of his own, Pinot grape juice. It was very good.
The rest of our afternoon was spent on the road. We eventually found our way just south of Monterey. We arrived early enough to get a little bit of dune time in so that Emma could run and Remy could play in the sand.
